What is expository preaching?

Expository preaching involves the exposition, or comprehensive explanation, of the Scripture; that is, expository preaching presents the meaning and intent of a biblical text, providing commentary and examples to make the passage clear and understandable. The word exposition is related to the word expose—the expository preacher’s goal is simply to expose the meaning of the Bible, verse by verse.

What others say about expository preaching.

  • John Calvin: “Preaching is the public exposition of Scripture by the man sent from God, in which God himself is present in judgment and in grace.”
  • J.I. Packer: “A sermon is the proclamation of the Word of God only if the text of the Word is accurately expounded and preached. So, in the strictest sense of the term, authentic preaching is expository preaching.”
  • David Helm: “Expositional preaching is empowered preaching that rightfully submits the shape and emphasis of the sermon to the shape and emphasis of a biblical text.”

Why is Expository preaching important?

I believe that expository preaching is so important because 2 Timothy 4:1–2 comes after 2 Timothy 3:16–17. The end of 2 Timothy 3 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God, and is profitable for teaching, rebuke, correction, and instruction in righteousness.” On the other side of that, built on the foundation of the nature, the truth, the authority, the clarity, and the sufficiency of God’s Word, Paul issues the charge to Timothy to preach the Word (2 Timothy 4:1–2).

Creation . Redemption . Restoration .

Colossians 1:13-18 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
